I have been so intrigued by a minimalist wardrobe or a capsule wardrobe. The basic premise is that you have a very small amount of clothing (generally between 30 and 40 items) from which you can create several different outfits and that is what you wear for a month, or a season, etc.
I love the idea of simplifying. I went through a phase a few years ago where I researched a lot about productivity and leadership. One of my favorite productivity tips that I picked up was to have a uniform that you wear everyday. For Steve Jobs it was a black turtleneck and jeans. Eliminating the time it takes to make unimportant decisions daily is a common tactic of some very successful people (even Barack Obama was known for paring down his wardrobe).
So I wanted to try a capsule wardrobe but I wasn't sure where to begin. I don't have a huge wardrobe but I have way more than 40 items and I do love most of my clothing every since I konmari-ed it two years ago. I gave it a lot of thought and I have now set up this wardrobe experiment for myself:
Start with 40-ish items
I pulled out a variety of 40 or so items. I counted everything separately so this includes all of my undergarments, etc. All of this clothing is on a rack in my bedroom. (note: shoes are not included in this count. I'll see how many different pairs I wear and figure out this over time).
Wear only these items
I am challenging myself to never pull clothing out of my closet. I am only wearing clothing from this limited wardrobe selection.
Shop in my closet
I plan to wear each item until it wears out or I have another reason to pass it on (i.e. it really doesn't fit well). At that point I will "shop" to replace the item in my own closet.
Here is an overview of my items (not every single one is pictured):
4 pairs of socks
4 pairs of underwear
2 sets of pajamas
2 workout outfits
2 pairs of yoga pants
4 pairs of pants
I have been doing this for two days so far. On day 1 I decided that my black pair of pants was too worn out to continue wearing in good conscience. Lesson from day 1: I really should invest in higher quality clothing. On day 2 I was informed that my black leggings are also in rather rough shape. I guess it's time to shop in my closet...and maybe I hang on to my legging/jeggings for too long. :-)
